Indigo Spires Salvia

Salvia x 'Indigo Spires'

Long spikes of deep indigo, tubular flowers are borne continuously from spring to frost on this vigorous perennial Salvia. Indigo Spires has long been one of our favorites and is a reliable performer in the landscape producing a 3-4' high plant with medium green foliage. The nectar rich flowers provide fodder for a variety of pollinators including hummingbirds, butterflies, and a variety of bees but especially bumblebees in our gardens. The flower color may appear more purple or more blue to different people, in this case it is all in the eye of the beholder. Item# 13131

Indigofera produces a nearly non-stop display of 4-8" long pendant spikes of light pink pea-like flowers throughout the growing season. Dwarf or Kirilow's Indigo makes an easy and durable, softly textured, slowly spreading, medium height groundcover for shade to sun. Caterpillar host: Funereal Duskywing. Item# 468

In summer arching spikes of showy green, flattened seed heads, reminiscent of fish hanging on a fishing pole, are produced which eventually fade to tan and remain showy until late winter or early spring. The seed heads flutter even in the slightest of breezes providing motion and interest for months. One of our most recognizable, useful, and adaptable native grasses, Inland Sea Oats, Chasmanthium latifolium, is a deciduous, small to medium-sized perennial that readily develops into a groundcover via both rhizomes and seed. Its shade and moisture tolerance lend it to use as a tallish groundcover in both full sun to lightly shaded, wet to average moist, naturalistic garden and landscape settings. The decorative seedheads are used both fresh and dried in cut flower arrangements and the foliage is utilized by the Northern Pearly-Eye, Salt and Pepper Skipper, Bell's Roadside Skipper, and the Bronzed Roadside Skipper butterflies. This rhizomatous native grass is widely distributed throughout the central and eastern US from near central and eastern Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas to Illinois, Indiana, and Pennsylvannia. Tough, adaptable, provides late summer, fall, and winter color, and it's deer resistant. Item# 13108

Clusters of starry, pure white flowers with red-purple 'eyes' may be produced throughout the year on well grown, well-established plants and are likely to attract hummingbird moths with their light perfume. Iris Marie Hoya, a hybrid cultivar, is a scandent shrub-like tropical that produces upright stems that eventually arch once they are too large and heavy for the stems to maintain upright or they can be trained to a support. The large ovate deep green glossy foliage is pretty enough on its own to make this easy and vigorous Hoya a worthy house plant. Provide a fertile, well-drained, quality cactus-mix like soil allowing the soil to become somewhat dry between waterings. High indirect light is optimum but some cool direct sunlight may be required especially in more northerly latitudes to induce flowering. Item# 12686

A nice tightly clump forming perennial from the works of Dr. Allen Armitage and the UGA horticulture program. The flowers provide much needed late summer fodder for bees, butterflies, and other garden beneficials. Item# 10929.
