Clusters of 2" white flowers that are held on long slender tubes release their heady perfume at night, but a curious nose may find fragrance almost any time of day. Considered by many to have some of the largest flowers among the Brunfelsia's, this Lady of the Night produces clusters of wavy edged, creamy white flowers that are borne on long tubes. Multitudes of 3-4" wide golden yellow daisies with a tan to dark brown 'eye' sit atop sturdy 18-24" stems and are produced in late spring to early summer and may repeat if deadheaded. The Large-Flower or Rough Coneflower, Rudbeckia grandiflora, is a tough and easy to grow clump forming perennial that can produce 80 or more flowering stems per clump once mature. This is probably one of the most underutilized native perennials as it has one of the most uniform habits of the native Coneflowers, it is long-lived and it can tolerate the moist to wet settings of acid bogs as well as short periods of drought once well-established. Deep purplish red buds open to deep pink tubular flowers with creamy white lips that fade to yellow as they age and produce a sweetly fragrant aroma which is most intense in the late afternoon and evening. The Late Dutch Honeysuckle is an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner popular for its dark blue-green foliage, red to purple tinged new growth, longer flowering season, and good garden manners. The Lemon Vine creates a beautiful foliage plant with its yellow to bronze and even orange, thick succulent leaves that adorn this vining tropical cactus. Makes a wonderful hanging basket, allow it to spill from mixed containers, or train it as a vine. More light produces richer foliage color. Huge clusters of 1-1/2" tubular yellow flowers are borne profusely throughout summer and fall on this vigorous shrub-like perennial and attract hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators. The flowers are sweetly fragrant at night and likely attract hummingbird moths. Lemon Zest Cestrum becomes large and shrub like in mild winter climates whereas in the coldest portions of its range, like zone 8B, it will often freeze to the ground and return in spring. An impressively cold hardy fig producing medium-sized amber, brown to near burgundy colored fruit with rich sweet amber flesh. Letizia Fig is sometimes compared to Chicago Hardy with which it shares exceptional hardiness into zone 6 but the fruit may be slightly smaller. It is also known to produce a breba or early crop along with the typical main fruit crop. This is an heirloom Italian fig that was brought from the Marche region of Italy in the early 1900's by the family of Steve and Peg Castorani and was named in honor of Steve's mother Letizia. Steve's family has grown and fruited this plant in Hockessin, Delaware since about 1965 and Steve brought cuttings to their North Creek Nursery near Landenberg, Pennsylvania where it apparently has done well in a semi-protected 'hot garden'. Burpee suggested that they name it and propagate and it quickly sold out. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in a well-drained, average moist, fertile soil for optimum vigor and fruit production.
