This is a large to very large purple fig with good flavor. An heirloom fig that was brought to the US from Italy via Dr. Sam Monticello's grandmother. The soon to be Mrs. Decarlo was a 16 years old bride and on her way to meet her new husband. She wrapped the cuttings in newspaper to get them here as she traveled to the new world aboard ship. Dr. Monticello, a Lake Charles Master Gardener and retired physician, says that they have been grown in this area from the time his grandmother arrived here as well as in Kansas where part of their family migrated to. Dr. Seuss produces clusters of large, sweetly fragrant trumpets that open yellow, deepen to a gold, and finally to orange as they age. Angel's Trumpets are fast growing tropical shrubs that act-like dieback perennials in the northern parts of their range but readily return from the roots in spring. An RHS Award of Garden Merit winner! The elegant formal-looking, medium-sized, semi-double, white to very pale pink flowers deepen to pink at their out edges and are centered by a boss of gold tipped stamens on white filaments. Masses of deep brick red trumpet shaped flowers nearly cover up this vine in spring or early summer just in time for arriving hummingbirds. It's almost like the two coordinate it or something! The red Dragon Lady Crossvine is a vigorous evergreen to semi-evergreen clinging vine(it does so via pads on the end of its tendrils and so is not destructive to brickwork and masonry) that can easily clamber up or along masonry, tree bark, fences, or other structural supports on its own. Crossvines are a low maintenance choice for fences, posts, arbors, and larger trellises. The deep red trumpet shaped flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators. The foliage takes on purple and burgundy coloration throughout the cooler months when grown in full to mostly sunny conditions. Dragon Lady Crossvine is reported to be a slightly more cold hardy selection and was chosen as the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society's Gold Medal Award winner in 2003. Item# 391

In summer the Drunkards Dream Mistletoe Cactus produces small golden-yellow strawflower-like flowers produced along the stem tips and is followed by the translucent berries which give this dainty Mistletoe Cactus its name. Like all succulents and cacti, this plant requires a fast draining soil and infrequent watering. Suitable for a windowsill as an indoor plant as well as an easy and low maintenance porch and patio plant. Ducher is considered by many to be the only white China rose. The ivory to white, fragrant, double flowers are produced from spring through fall and are held against soft green foliage. With a more diminutive and refined habit than many China roses, Ducher is small enough for containers or in the garden. Large 6-8" burgundy and cream, widely flaring Dutchman's Pipe shaped flowers are borne from summer to fall on this vigorous and easy to grow perennial vine. A fast growing root hardy perennial into zone 8, the Dutchman's Pipevine makes a quick summer screen and a definite conversation piece anytime it's in flower. Coming again in 2022! Small clusters of 2-3" wide brilliant golden yellow trumpet shaped flowers are produced throughout the growing season to potentially year-round under warm tropical conditions and are mainly butterfly pollinated but also attract bees and other pollinators. The Dwarf Allamanda, Allamanda cathartica 'Compacta', is a small, naturally evergreen, tropical shrub growing to 2-3'H x 2-3'W and potentially slightly larger with age. The stems are adorned with whorls of glossy narrow foliage to about 3" long. This is an easy to grow, heat and sunloving tropical with good to excellent flower power and makes an easy container plant that is sure to add a tropical flair to any sunny garden setting. For optimum vigor and flowering provide the Dwarf Allamanda with a full sun to partly shaded location in a fertile, well-drained soil. It is important to allow the soil to become somewhat dry between waterings and the hotter it is generally the happier they are and will sulk under cool (below about 55-60^oF) and wet conditions. The wide, thick, low succulent arching silvery green foliage is spotted and speckled with large and small dark green spots. Leaves may be occasionally lightly to heavily variegated with white. Ledebouria is a bulbous perennial that produces small spikes of white hyacinth-like flowers in spring and summer that are held well above the intricately patterned foliage. An easy and forgiving window sill or patio plant, Ledebourias are native to the forests of Eastern Africa and multiply readily and quickly. Do not keep overly moist and provide sharp drainage. The dwarf form of it's much larger cousin and native to the sandy and sandy loam soils of much of the southeast US. The Dwarf Pawpaw produces 3-5" green-yellow elongated fruit that eventually turn brown to nearly black when ripe. It is reported to have a banana custard-like flavor, some say that fully ripe fruit of the Dwarf Pawpaw is equal to the Pawpaw, while others firmly disagree. Produces small maroon to greenish flowers flowers in spring. A small to medium-sized, spreading to upright, moderately slow growing, native deciduous shrub. Each leaf of this miniature Century Plant is broadly edged in a creamy white creating a nice contrast with the rich green at its heart creating a beautiful rosette of variegated foliage. This selection seems to be a true miniature and is great for smaller containers. Item# 10352.

Another excellent native shrub for the landscape! The dense neat mound of deep green glossy foliage and red tinged stems is topped by clusters of white flowers in spring which make way to red berries ripening through purple and finally black. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators and the fruit attract songbirds and smaller fructivores. Walter's Dwarf Viburnum, Viburnum obovatum 'Densa', is a compact, densly branching selection of this southeastern native. This shrub's dense habit lends it to use anywhere a small to medium-sized shrub is desired in the landscape. It is generally evergreen into zone 8A and tends to be deciduous to semi-evergreen in zones 6 and 7. Use this tough native shrub in place of Dwarf Yaupon, Indian Hawthorne, or anywhere a medium-sized, disease resistant, low maintenance shrub or hedge is desired.
