Deep wine-red foliage provides a wonderful foil for the tall sturdy spikes of light pink tubular flowers in late spring and early summer attracting bees, hummingbirds, and the occassional butterfly. Dark Towers Penstemon, an offspring of Penstemon digitalis, was developed by Dale Lindgren at the University of Nebraska from his original selection of Husker Red. Dark Towers has darker foliage that keeps its color better through summer and it has pink flowers versus white on Husker Red. Provide this easy to grow clump forming perennial, a nativar (a cultivar from native species), with a moist to average moist, well-drained, fertile soil in a full to mostly sunny location for optimum vigor, flowering, and for the deepest foliage colors. 1" tubular orange blooms, tipped in white, are produced from spring to fall on this upright to spreading shrub-like perennial. David Verity Cigar Plant is an easy to grow, heat and sunloving hybrid Cuphea that flowers non-stop from spring or early summer through fall. Spikes of comparatively large, two-lipped tubular flowers are a brilliant dayglow pink with a contrasting small white throat and are produced from late spring or summer into fall attracting hummingbirds, larger bees, and occassional butterflies. Dayglow Salvia is new to the US in 2021, an Autumn Sage and Littleleaf Sage hybrid, with a long flowering habit, sturdy disposition and a naturally upright to rounded habit. This shrub-like perennial may remain evergreen in mild winter climates, like zones 9B-10, but acts like a die-back perennial where temperatures fall much below about 30^oF. A profusion of golden orange-yellow dark eyed daisies are produced in mid to late summer and into fall atop tall sturdy stems and attract a myriad of smaller pollinators and garden beneficials. Vivid red tubular flowers emerge from dark colored calyxes on lax spikes from late spring to fall on a compact plant with rich deep green foliage. Dooley Hydrangea produces large mopheads of rich blue or pink, depending on soil pH. This is a vigorous growing, exceptionally cold hardy Big Leaf Hydrangea introduced by Dr. Michael Dirr.Hydrangeas are easy to grow deciduous shrubs that prefer partly shaded areas of the garden with a rich, moist but not wet, soil. The large deep purplish-blue star-shaped flowers open from balloon shaped buds look as though one flower was neatly tucked inside the other. 8-10" long, double, creamy white, night fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers are produced throughout the warmer months of the year or nearly year round when grown in a greenhouse or conservatory. The Double White Angel's Trumpet, a form of Datura metel, is often grown as an annual or short-lived shrub-like perennial and it is easy enough to save a few seed from the large capsules once they split open to grow new ones for next year. These are fast growing small to medium-sized, shrub-like, frost tender tropical plants that are easy and rewarding. Also known as Devil's Trumpet, due to the poisonous properties of this member of the Nightshade family. 1/2" wide, pure white, double flowers almost resemble tiny white roses and the flowers shine against the foil of very dark green, small, ovate, fine textured foliage. The heaviest flowering typically occurs spring and may produce flowers sporadically into fall under good conditions. The Double White Serissa, Serissa foetida 'Flore Pleno', is a dwarf, naturally evergreen shrub with small fine-textured deep green glossy ovate leaves and a naturally mounding, semi-open habit and plants rarely exceed about 2'H x 2'W at maturity. In the past it has been used as a substitute for boxwood especially when a low clipped hedge was desired. Left to its own devices it may become more open with age and a semi-hard pruning can restore the plants to their former glory.
