Semmes' Hardy Bottlebrush

Callistemon citrinus 'Semmes Hardy'

Large deep red bottlebrush-like flowers are produced at the ends of the arching stems in spring and sporadically through summer on large established plants. Semmes' Hardy Bottlebrush was selected as much for its cold hardiness (large well-established plants have increased cold hardiness over young tender plants) as for its habit and flowering potential. Bronze tinged new growth follows the flush of spring flowers that are sure to attract hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and other garden beneficials. Scarlet red, 1/2-3/4" long, tart, cherry-like fruit are produced in abundance during late spring on a vigorous, pest and disease resistant deciduous fountaining shrub. The Goumi Berry is exceptionally high in vitamin C and can be enjoyed fresh or made into a jelly that is, in our opinion, as good or better than Mayhaw jelly. It can also be made into pie filling. Seeds are edible, but have an unpleasant texture. Adding a bit of almond extract to processed or deseeded pulp leaves you with an amazing cherry flavor for desserts and preserves.  This selection was shared with us many years ago by plantsman Sherwood Aikens of Minden, Louisiana and our plants have been productive for over 30 years with practically no maintenance. One of the few plants with a symbiotic nitrogen fixating bacteria relationship that is not a Legume. Easy and reliable. Item# 444
