Purple falls with prominent darker red-purple veining and a contrasting gold signal topped by the light lavender standards that deepen to purple at their outer edges, and are topped by light blush pink style arms.purple standards. Earline Sudduth Louisiana Iris flowers in midseason, typically April, flowering and grows to about 30-36"H. Louisiana Irises are easy and adaptable, rhizomatous perennials with fans of deep green sword-like foliage and seem as at home in standing water as they do in average moist garden soils. Remember that these plants do most of their growing in fall and winter and so this is when they should be fed and fall is also a great time to divide plants if desired. Earl's Gold Deciduous Azalea

Rhododendron 'Earl's Gold'

The large rounded clusters of deep orange and gold buds open to sunny yellow, fragrant flowers that attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds in early spring atop the bare stems. Earl's Gold Deciduous Azalea, an Earl Sommerville hybrid, develops into an upright to rounded, medium to large deciduous shrub well suited to bright woodland settings but will also thrive in full sun under good conditions. Like the Aromi hybrids, the Earl Sommerville hybrids show excellent tolerance to the heat and humidity of the Southeastern US. Sometimes still fondly referred to as Wild Honeysuckle Bushes, these nativars will do best in an average moist, well-drained, fertile, acidic soil from partial shade to full sun conditions. Topdress with an organic mulch like pinestraw, a.k.a. pine needles, or pine bark. Item# 13290

Edward Goucher Glossy Abelia

Abelia x grandiflora 'Edward Goucher'

One of the earliest to begin flowering and an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner! Clusters of lilac-pink tubular flowers are produced in abundance beginning in midspring and continuing into fall and are held against a contrasting foil of long-lasting showy deep bronze-red bracts and exceptionally dark green glossy foliage that takes on purple and bronze tones in winter. The flowers of Abelias attract a variety of pollinators including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Edward Goucher Glossy Abelia, considered to be a hybrid of Abelia x grandiflora x A. shumanii, has a naturally dense, rounded to vase-shaped habit on this medium-sized, evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub. Abelias are known for their toughness and adaptability to a variety of soil types provided they have average or better drainage. Deer resistant, somewhat salt tolerant, and mature, well-established plants are moderately drought resistant. The large, up to 6-7" diameter, rounded clusters are composed of deep violet blue, trumpet shaped flowers that become pendant as they open are held on sturdy 3-4' high stems in summer. Elaine Agapanthus or Lily of the Nile is a vigorous, clump forming, naturally evergreen, tropical, root hardy perennial with arching, narrow strap-like, medium green foliage. Provide Agapanthus with a full sun to partly shaded site in a rich fertile, average moist soil with average or better drainage for optimum vigor and flowering. Makes an easy and low-maintenance container plant where not hardy. Agapanthus flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. May be fully winter deciduous in areas where moderate to hard freezes occur. Spikes of electric dark royal purple, 2" long tubular flowers emerge from black calyxes along black spikes throughout the growing season attracting a variety of larger pollinators, especially hummingbirds and swallowtail butterflies. Electric Purple Anise Sage, a selection or hybrid of Salvia guaranitica, is a clump-forming, branching, herbaceous perennial cloaked in glossy, deep green, anise-scented, quilted foliage and growing to about 30-40" high and 18-24" wide. Makes an easy addition to the sunny garden or landscape or enjoy it as a medium-sized container specimen. Enrei Ginger

Hedychium 'Enrei'

Large spikes of fragrant, sunny yellow butterfly-shaped flowers are accented with a deep golden blotch all on a moderately vigorous plant with rich green foliage. Enrei Ginger, a Hedychium hybrid, was originally shared with Glasshouse Works by horticulturist Jack Craig. The fragrant showy flowers should attract larger butterflies and maybe even the hummingbird-like pollinating Sphinx moths. Makes a good cut flower and is resistant to browsing by deer and rabbits. The Hedychium Gingers typically need the equivalent of about 4-6 hours of cool sunlight in a moist to average moist, rich fertile soil with average or better drainage for optimum vigor and flowering. An organic mulch with all of its many benefits is highly recommended especially for new plantings and in zones 7-8. Item# 13132

Evan's Yellow Amaryllis

Hippeastrum evansiae, Amaryllis evansiae, H. anzaldoi, A. anzaldoi

The starry soft primrose yellow, wavy edged flowers are centered by a deeper yellow star shaped throat that is tinged with orange at its edges and are produced in clusters of 3-4 atop light green sturdy stems in late winter to early spring. Evan's Yellow Amaryllis, Hippeastrum evansiae, is a rare and endangered Bolivian Amaryllis species that readily produces offsets at the tips of the fleshy roots during winter dormancy. It is from a relatively dry region and does best in soils with excellent drainage and will prefer a dry winter rest period of 6-8 weeks prior to flowering. Evan's Yellow Amaryllis is considered to be one of the smallest Hippeastrum species and is a naturally deciduous tropical species. It is reported to be hardy into zone 9B, although, it is possible it will withstand colder regions but we have not yet tried it in the ground. Item# 12278

Evergreen Wisteria, Summer Wisteria, Millettia reticulata, Millettia

Millettia reticulata, Callerya reticulata, Wisteriopsis reticulata

A 2016 Best of the Best Award winner at the UGA Trial Gardens! Large grape-like clusters of sweetly fragrant, dark purple and reddish-purple, pea-like flowers are produced throughout summer on this strong woody twining climber. Evergreen Wisteria is a non-invasive species, unlike the common Chinese Wisteria, and can be evergreen in mild winter climates (zones 9-10) but is generally deciduous elsewhere. Established plants will flower continuously from late spring and into fall. The flowers attract bees and other smaller pollinators. Evergreen Wisteria is an easy to grow and reliable vine but will need a strong long-lasting support in its permanent home as it will get fairly heavy in time. Excellent for sturdy arbors, trellises, and along fences. Item# 414

The rounded mass of steel blue narrow sword like foliage is topped by tall spikes of dangling creamy white bell-shaped flowers are produced in spring on mature plants. Excalibur Yucca, a selection of our native Yucca filamentosa, is grown mainly for its steely blue to gray-green foliage that provides a nice contrast to nearby plants. This is a tough as nails, clump-forming, evergreen, small  native shrub that has a naturally rounded habit and even though it is fairly drought resistant it happily thrives in most well-drained soils in a full sun to partly shaded site. Adam's Needle is found throughout much of the eastern and central US and as far west as Kansas and is common component in the Longleaf Pine understory. Camellia 'Extravaganza'

This RHS Award of Garden Merit selection produces large to very large, white, anemone form to semi-double flowers that are vividly flecked, and striped with deep pink to near red with a boss of gold tipped stamens atop yellow filaments in mid season or January and February. Extravaganza Camellia is a large flowered Japonica with a moderate rate of growth and a densely branching compact habit maturing into an 8-10' high by 6-8' wide, large evergreen shrub cloaked in deep green glossy foliage. The pollen laden flowers attract bees and potentially other pollinators on warmer days. Use caution when selecting your planting site as these flowers may cause traffic jams if planted to close the road! Camellias prefer a moist to average moist, well-drained, loamy to sandy, acidic soil with a deep organic mulch.
