Spikes of deep blue to near purple pea-shaped flowers are produced in spring atop the gray-green foliage in mid to late spring. Blue Wild Indigo is a long-lived easy to grow native that develops and extensive taproot and so it prefers not to be moved once it begins to get established. Baptisias are durable pest and disease resistant perennials that should be considered the Lupine of the South. Provide a sunny position for optimum flowering. Long-Bract Wild Indigo, Cream False Indigo, Plains Wild Indigo, Prairie Wild Indigo, Paque-Paque Plant, Pock-Pock Plant

Baptisia bracteata var. leucophaea, B. leucophaea

Large showy horizontal spikes composed of soft primrose colored, large, pea-shaped blossoms are produced in early spring providing rich rewards to native pollinators, particularly queen bumblebees. The arching spikes sit along blue-green stems adorned with round, 3-5 foliate leaves that fade to gray as summer wanes. The black grape-like clusters of ripened seed pods offer forage to wildlife like quail and wild turkey or spread the seeds and grow more of this beautiful and long lived native perennial. Long-Bract Wild Indigo is one of the lower growing Baptisias and rarely seems to exceed 18-24" high but may spread to 36" across at maturity. Item# 10870.

Tall spikes of sunny yellow, pea-shaped, bee-pollinated flowers that age to orange with a purplish tinge are produced beginning in mid to late spring with the show lasting for weeks that is aided by the production of secondary flowering shoots. Solar Flare Prairieblues™ Baptisia or False Indigo is a hardy clump-forming taprooted perennial that emerges in early spring with purplish young foliage and stems that slowly matures to the typical light gray green. Baptisias could be considered the Lupine of the South and each will produce more and more flowering stems eventually devoloping into a dense rounded mound of foliage and flowers. A hybrid of two of our native species, the Prairieblues Baptisias were selected not only for their unique colors but also for their extra large flower spikes, durability, and vigor. Twilite Prairieblues™ Baptisia, False Indigo

A vigorous hybrid native perennial, Twilite Prairieblues™ Baptisia can produce over 100 flowering spikes per plant of deep violet-purple to nearly burgundy flowers with a soft yellow keel held above the rich green foliage. An excellent addition to the perennial border or cut-flower garden that is drought tolerant, deer resistant, durable, and easy. Considered a must for the cutflower garden as the spikes have an excellent vase life. Twilite Prairieblues™ Baptisia is a hybrid of Baptisia australis and Baptisia sphaerocarpa and was developed at the Chicago Botanic Gardens by Dr. Jim Ault.
