One of the earliest large flowering Japonica Camellias to begin flowering, October Affair produces an abundance of perfectly formed, 3-4" wide, fully double flowers with cupped petals that are pure white at their center but with the outer rows of petals becoming tipped in light to rosy pink. A vigorous yet dense and compact growing evergreen shrub with a naturally upright habit becoming rounded with age. Masses of 1" wide yellow-eyed bluish purple daisies absolutely cover this plant for weeks in late summer and fall. October Skies Aromatic Aster, a selection of Symphyotrichum oblongifolium, is a low mounding perennial that develops into a compact shrub-like plant by flowering time. Excellent fall color for the garden as well as drought tolerance and pest and disease resistance make this an excellent addition to the perennial or wildflower border and landscape. Shades of red, burnt orange, golden yellow, and green are randomly splashed across the glossy evergreen foliage of this durable groundcover. Ogon Nishiki Asiatic Jasmine, a.k.a. Salsa, Summer Sunset, and Golden Brocade, creates a fiery splash of color anywhere in the garden or spilling from containers, over walls, or even from hanging baskets. Trachelospermum asiaticum is a naturally evergreen, 6-12" high groundcover to small twining vine that can produce creamy yellow fragrant flowers similar to Confederate or Star Jasmine, Trachelospermum jasminoides, when grown as a vine or when allowed to trail from hanging baskets and over retaining walls, though it is generally infrequent and is the exception rather than the rule. Few plants can compete with the disposition of this dense groundcover once it is fully established in the landscape making it an easy and reliable choice for landscapers and tough to garden in areas, like beneath trees, where few other plants can thrive or in parking lot islands. It is heat loving, both sun and shade tolerant, deer and rabbit resistant, and has few pest or disease issues particularly when grown in soil with average or better drainage. For the best and brightest foliage coloration some direct sunlight during the day is beneficial and the more the better. Probably best suited to zones 8 and warmer for inground plantings but it can be used as a groundcover in containers beneath larger plants. Item# 941

Up to a dozen or more white fragrant trumpets with wine colored inner markings are produced atop sturdy stems in late spring and early summer. The Milk and Wine Crinum is an old favorite pass-a-long plant that readily multiplies and the long-lived individual bulbs can be as large as a man's head. Medium green strap-like foliage. Beginning as early as midsummer the branching stems are cloaked in 1/2" wide white daisies with a contrasting yellow eye eventually becoming reddish. The nectar and pollen laden flowers attract mainly smaller pollinators like bees providing an important late summer source for winter stores. The Ontario Aster, Symphiotrichum ontarionis, is a native perennial that colonizes via rhizomes and grows to about 30-40"H. It is found mainly in the central US from coastal Louisiana north to Canada commonly in semi-shaded sites along stream banks, bogs, and similar consistently moist locations. Deadhead once flowering is complete to minimize reseeding if desired but songbirds may enjoy the small seeds if they are left to ripen. The exceptionally dark purple to near black foliage provides the perfect foil for the numerous 2-3' high spikes of light lavender tubular flowers that appear white against their backdrop. Onyx and Pearls Penstemon or Beardtongue begins flowering in late spring to early summer providing weeks of color and a feast of nectar for hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Even when not in flower the cloak of dark foliage provides a wonderful contrast for its neighbors. Candelabra-like spikes of orange bracts that subtend rich orangey coral colored 2" tubular flowers that are designed for hummingbird pollination are produced throughout much of the year on this tropical beauty. An evergreen shrub in its native habitat it can easily be enjoyed as a container plant for a lightly shaded patio. This is very similar to Aphelandra sinclairiana but a few minor differences set it apart making us think that it may be A. leonardii. Clusters of orange, 1", Chinese Hats are produced from summer to autumn along the arching stems of this unusual shrub. A deep red, nectar rich, tubular flower emerges from the centers of each of the round calyx. The Orange Chinese Hat is an excellent late summer and fall flowering shrub-like to die-back perennial for a sunny location. Large rounded clusters of 2" orange-yellow tubular flowers sit like golden crowns atop the large rich green tropical foliage of this rare beautiful tropical. Loose clusters of red-orange trumpet-like blooms are borne from mid-summer to fall on this upright to spreading woody perennial to large shrub. We've seen beautiful specimens of Orange Jubilee Esperanza or Orangebells in the Hemisfair Park area of San Antonio, Texas. More freely flowering and larger growing in mild winter climates but still performs well as a die-back summer and fall flowering perennial once well-established. Item# 532.

Add a little tropical punch to your summer! Brilliant orange, 5-6" wide, full rounded flowers centered by a narrow pink halo that surrounds the deep magenta eye and is centered by a contrasting red tipped staminal column adorned with bright yellow stamens. Tall dense spikes of golden-orange nectar rich flowers are produced throughout the year in mild winter climates atop an upright growing shrub with dense velvety gray foliage. Orange Sceptre Butterfly Bush is a hybrid Buddleja that remains evergreen in mild winter climates like zone 9 and warmer. The flowers attract larger bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. A rare Sweet Olive bearing large clusters of creamy orange, sweetly fragrant flower clusters in fall that can nearly hide the stems of the plants at their peak. The Orange Sweet Olive makes an easy and low maintenance addition to the garden and landscape that eventually develops into a fairly large evergreen shrub or small tree with an upright to rounded habit. These are naturally long-lived evergreens with few pest or disease problems and are adaptable to most well-drained garden soils and may be at their best in a full to mostly sunny location although they are fairly tolerant. The Orange Sweet Olive can be grown as a shrub, tree standard, espalier, or in containers where not hardy. Item# 10376
