Fabaceae
Snail Vine
Phaseolus giganteus
2'' purple, coiled snail-like flowers are produced in profusion from summer to fall. A vigorous perennial vine in the cooler portions of its range. This vine is often sold as Vigna caracalla, or Corkscrew Flower. The Snail Vine's flowers are produced singly or in small clusters of mostly purple flowers that originate from the leaf axils whereas the Corkscrew Flower produces loose upright spikes, at the end of the stems, of mostly white curled flowers with highlights of lavender that fade to a creamy yellow and deeper lavender. It is very difficult to distinguish the two when not in flower. Also, the Corkscrew Flower is not frost tolerant.
