Indigo Spires Baptisia, False Indigo

In late spring to early summer, loads of 12-15" high flower spikes that are adorned with deep blue to deep violet pea-like, nectar rich flowers and are accented by a narrow yellow keel and are held well above the neat mounds of foliage. The main flower show is extended by an encore of secondary flower spikes and the flowers attract mainly bees as pollinators. Indigo Spires Baptisia or False Indigo, a hybrid of our native species, is an easy and low maintenance, deer resistant, large, long-lived clump forming, herbaceous, taprooted perennial maturing to about 3-4'H and wide. As the palnts mature they produce more and more flowering spikes with each passing year with some plants producing over a 100 spikes on mature plants. Considered a must for the cutflower garden as the spikes have an excellent vase life. In early to midspring the 18" high scapes are topped by loose clusters of frilly light lavender 1-2" wide yellow-eyed daisies that attract a variety of pollinators and other garden beneficials particularly native bees. Lynn Haven Carpet Fleabane, a selection of our native Erigeron pulchellus, is a tough, shade tolerant, evergreen, rosette forming, rhizomatous groundcover adorned in grayish green foliage that creates a dense near weed proof mat that slowly expands each growing season. It is generally at its best in sunny poor, sandy, rocky, or otherwise well-drained soils and needs little to no care once fully established. It is tough enough to grow right up next to asphalt along roadsides and seems perfectly oblivious to it as well as in dryish partly shaded conditons. In full sun areas it may look its best with supplemental water during dry periods. Margarita Abelia

Abelia x grandiflora 'Margarita'  

The bronze to green new growth is heavily edged in broad to narrow bands of red, orange, and yellow adorning deep red stems and are topped by clusters of nectar rich white flowers in summer that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Margarita Abelia is a compact, densely branching, evergreen to semi-evergreen, small shrub that can be utilized both as easy and low maintenance container specimens as well as for adding fiery color to the garden and landscape. Although Abelias are tolerant of some shade, Margarita will have the richest colors and densest habit when grown in a full sun to mostly sunny area. In shade the variegation tends to range more into yellow and chartreuse. Provide an average to well-drained, fertile soil with average moisture for optimum vigor and health. Mauvilla Gold Aromi Deciduous Azalea

Rhododendron 'Mauvilla Gold' (Aromi)  

The large rounded clusters of tubular open to deep orange, fragrant flowers with a contrasting gold splotch that attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds in early spring atop the bare stems. Mauvilla Gold Aromi Deciduous Azalea develops into an upright to rounded, medium-sized deciduous shrub well suited to bright woodland settings but will also thrive in full sun under good conditions. The Aromi Deciduous Azaleas were developed by Dr. Eugene Aromi of Mobile, Alabama, and are known for both their amazing spring display of fragrant flowers as well as their ability to withstand the heat and humidity of the Southeastern US. Sometimes still fondly referred to as Wild Honeysuckle Bushes, these nativars will do best in an average moist, well-drained, fertile, acidic soil from partial shade to full sun conditions. 1" wide deep blue to deep purple flowers with a contrasting yellow eye are held atop the fine-textured iris-like foliage in spring to early summer attracting bees and other smaller pollinators. Moody Blues Macoun's Blue-Eyed Grass, a selection of Sisyrinchium idahoense var. macounii, is a small herbaceous clump-forming native perennial well suited to the edge of a sunny perennial border or other naturalistic settings. Use the Blue-Eyed Grasses near the front of the perennial border, tuck them among the rock garden as an accent, as an informal border along paths, as well as part of naturalistic settings with other plants of similar size. The flowers are likely mainly bee pollinated and the plants can reseed though it never seems to do so aggressively and unwanted seedlings are easily removed. This is the only known Ruellia species with such showy bracts and they can provide color for months. Plum Crazy Salvia, Anise Sage

PUFF® Pink Anemone, Windflower

In summer, silvery buds open to display the fully double bubblegum pink 2" wide flowers with yellow eyes that are held on sturdy airy branching stems well above the foliage and are followed by silky white and silvery seed heads. PUFF® Pink Anemone or Windflower was selected as much or more for its tight 12" x 12" densely branching habit as for its excellent display of bright summer flowers. This is an herbaceous, clump forming, shade tolerant perennial that will do best in an average moist, fertile, well-drained soil in an area that receives at least 3-4 hours of direct sunlight. In areas with cooler summers Anemones can tolerate full sun but in hotter climates consider providing them with afternoon shade. Tough, easy and long-lived. Purple Flame Blue Flag, a unique selection of the native Iris versicolor, was selected in 2020 as part of the American Horticulture Society's Mt. Cuba Collection™ after literally decades of garden trials. Purring Tiger Siberian Iris

Iris x 'Purring Tiger'  

For all of us LSU fans out there, Geaux Tigers! The new and aptly named Purring Tiger Siberian Iris produces deep golden yellow falls that are heavily accented with deep purple veining and are topped by dark smoky purple standards and deep reddish purple style arms. This is a compact growing Siberian Iris topping out at about 24" high and it flowers in midseason or early summer. The deep green narrow foliage provides grass-like motion in the garden even when the plants are not in flower. Provide Siberian Iris with an average moist to consistently moist moderately fertile soil and they can be planted near ponds, streams, and bog gardens as well as in average moist garden and landscape settings. They generally keep the best looking foliage where they have reliable access to moisture during the growing season. Shamrock Dwarf Inkberry Holly

Ilex glabra 'Shamrock'  

In spring, tiny greenish-white flowers are produced in the leaf axils attracting a variety of bees and those that are pollinated will produce large 3/8" diameter shiny black berries. Beyond its value to wildlife, the Shamrock Dwarf Inkberry Holly, a selection of Ilex glabra, was selected for its compact 3-4' size, its adaptability to a variety of soil and sun conditions, and for the fact that it suckers less than the species. Its main requirement is acidic soils ranging from average moist to wet. Inkberry Holly is native to all states along the eastern seaboard and the Gulf Coast. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in a moist soil for optimum vigor and the densest growth habit. Caterpillar host: Holly Blue. Item# 13287

Sinfonietta Louisiana Iris

Iris x 'Sinfonietta'  

Medium to deep blue falls and standards with the falls being accented by contrasting gold crests at their base are produced in early to midseason, or March to April, atop 30-36" high stems. Sinfonietta Louisiana Iris has been highly popular since its introduction and was awarded an Honorable Mention in 1990 and the Award of Garden Merit in 1992 by the American Iris Society. Louisiana Irises are easy and adaptable, rhizomatous perennials with fans of deep green sword-like foliage and seem as at home in standing water as they do in average moist garden soils. Remember that these plants do most of their growing in fall and winter and so this is when they should be fed and fall is also a great time to divide plants if desired. Provide a full to mostly sunny site for optimum vigor and flowering. Item# 13339

Indigo Spires Baptisia, False Indigo

Baptisia 'Indigo Spires'  PP26750

In late spring to early summer, loads of 12-15" high flower spikes that are adorned with deep blue to deep violet pea-like, nectar rich flowers and are accented by a narrow yellow keel and are held well above the neat mounds of foliage. The main flower show is extended by an encore of secondary flower spikes and the flowers attract mainly bees as pollinators. Indigo Spires Baptisia or False Indigo, a hybrid of our native species, is an easy and low maintenance, deer resistant, large, long-lived clump forming, herbaceous, taprooted perennial maturing to about 3-4'H and wide. As the palnts mature they produce more and more flowering spikes with each passing year with some plants producing over a 100 spikes on mature plants. Considered a must for the cutflower garden as the spikes have an excellent vase life.
