The 2-3" wide, sweetly fragrant flowers are double to peony form, with medium pink outer petals that fade to a soft pink at their heart. The small light pink inner petaloids are usually interspersed with yellow stamens. Sweet Emily Kate Camellia is beautiful as well as worth sticking your nose in! Gaining the beauty of its Camellia japonica parent and is imparted with the fragrance from C. lutchuensis. The medium-sized, elegantly cupped, semi-double flowers are composed of deep rosy red petals that are edged in a broad and starkly contrasting bright white band and are centered by a boss of golden stamens often mixed with a few petaloids. Flowering occurs in early to midseason, October to February, attracting bees and other pollinators. Medium-sized, brightly colored, nearing fuchsia to rose red, rose to loose peony form flowers are produced early in the season, October to December. William Lanier Hunt Sasanqua Camellia, a C. x hiemalis hybrid, has a vigorous upright to spreading, densely branching habit and is cloaked in dark glossy green, medium-textured foliage. Use this adaptable small to medium-sized evergreen shrub as a hedge, accent, or specimen plant for both the garden and landscape as well as for container culture. The Sasanqua Camellias are much more tolerant of growing conditions than standard Japonica Camellias and can tolerate less than perfect soils and full sun to light shade conditions. Winter's Snowman Sasanqua Camellia

Camellia x 'Winter's Snowman'  

Pink tinged buds open to 2 1/2-3" wide, ruffled, fragrant, anemone-form to semi-double flowers with a boss of golden yellow stamens that are produced early in the season in Nov-December. Winter's Snowman Sasanqua Camellia is a hybrid that was selected for its reliable zone 6 cold hardiness, clean white fragrant flowers, as well as for its vigor. This is a naturally fairly large growing evergreen shrub with medium textured, deep green Sasanqua-like foliage that emerges burgundy in spring similar to the Red-Tip Photinia and extending its seasons of interest. Like a Sasanqua, Winter's Snowman can be maintained as a 4-6'H hedge, formal to informal screen, or allow it to grow into a naturally large evergreen shrub to small tree with a naturally upright to spreading habit. Provide Camellias with a fertile soil rich in organic matter, with average moisture, and a deep organic mulch. Winter's Star Sasanqua Camellia

Camellia x hiemalis 'Winter's Star'  

Zone 6 US National Arboretum introduction! Medium-sized, single, pink often described with a lavender tinge, flowers with a boss of sunny yellow stamens are produced in fall or early in the season, October to November, and are held against a foil of glossy, deep green, medium-textured foliage. Winter's Star Sasanqua Camellia, an Ackerman cross using C. oleifera for cold hardiness and is listed with the C. x hiemalis hybrids, is a vigorous growing, medium-sized, evergreen shrub with a fairly upright and rounded, densely branching habit. It has taken temperatures as low as -12oF with no apparent damage and no protection except for that of pine trees overhead per Dr. Ackerman's description in the U.S. National Arboretum's pamphlet for these introductions. The Sasanqua Camellias are much more tolerant of growing conditions than standard Japonica Camellias and can tolerate less than perfect soils and full sun to light shade conditions. From a profusion of buds emerge 3" wide, pure white, nicely fragrant flowers whose petals are notched at the end and surround a boss of yellow stamens. Yuhsienensis Camellia is a moderately vigorous grower with a naturally dense branching habit on an upright to rounded evergreen shrub. Flowering begins early in the season and may continue well into midseason (November to January). This is a parent of the hybrid Yume Camellia which itself was used to create the "Dream" series from Bobby Green and Green's Nurseries.
