Cut Flowers

The medium to large, semi-double, fiery flame red flowers centered by a contrasting boss of gold stamens atop white filaments and are produced in midseason, January to February. The pollen laden flowers attract bees and other pollinators on warmer winter days. Flame Camellia is a large flowered Japonica type with a vigorous upright and densely branching habit becoming rounded in form with maturity. In Stirling Macoboy's 1987 Illustrated Encyclopedia of Camellias he describes the flowers as "One of the most vividly colored of all camellias". Provide Camellias with a fertile soil rich in organic matter, with average moisture, and an organic mulch. An RHS Award of Garden Merit winner! Neatly formed, small to medium-sized, bell-shaped, red to coral-red flowers centered by a boss of contrasting gold tipped stamens on white filaments are produced over an extended period from early to midseason and are held against a foil of deep green, glossy, medium-textured foliage. Freedom Bell Camellia is classified as a non-Reticulata hybrid with Sasanqua-like foliage and is a vigorous growing, large evergreen shrub with a naturally upright, densely branching habit that rounds out with maturity. Garlic Chives or Chinese Chives are similar to Society Garlic in foliage and durability but with a slightly lower growth habit and producing flat-topped clusters of white blooms from summer to fall. The nectar rich flowers are seemingly constantly abuzz with mainly smaller pollinators.The mildly garlic flavored foliage and flowers are widely utilized in Asian cuisine. A nearly continuous display of dark-eyed 3-4" wide dark golden yellow daisies are held above the rosettes of deep green foliage throughout summer attracting bees and a variety of other garden beneficials. Glitters Like Gold Black-Eyed Susan is a hybrid Rudbeckia boasting improved vigor, longer flowering, and resistance to leaf spot as compared to the longtime favorite Goldstrum. The tall dense spikes of golden yellow flowers and seedheads are held well above the fountaining clump of wide olive green foliage on sturdy 6' high stems beginning in early August and are showy throughout winter. Golden Sunset® Yellow Indiangrass, a University of Minnesota selection of Sorghastrum nutans,  was selected for its early flowering, sturdy stems that do not fall over or lodge and last through winter, as well as for its reliable zone 3 cold hardiness. it has received high marks in trials and has been in development for about 15 years. This is a wonderful refinement for this showy native grass making it a useful addition to both formal and informal garden and landscape settings. The seed heads provide fodder for songbirds and other wildlife and the foliage is utilized by the Pepper-and-Salt Skipper butterfly as a caterpillar host plant. Provide a full to mostly sunny site optimally in a well-drained loamy soil with average moisture but the plants are fairly adaptable to soil types and are drought resistant once fully established. Medium-sized, formal double flowers are pale pink blushing to white at the outer edges and may or may not show darker pink variegation with flowering occurring in mid to late season, January to April. The light colored flowers are held against a foil of deep green foliage. Airy, wispy, fragrant, tan and pink, conicle panicles are held atop the mounds of deep green foliage in late summer with the plants taking on red tones in fall and lightening to beige for winter. Gone With The Wind Prairie Dropseed, a selection of our native Sporobolus heterolepis, is a tough, herbaceous, medium-sized, clump forming, perennial grass with a slightly more compact size than the typical species and growing to about 36-40" high and 24-30" wide. The flowers are reported to have a fragrance reminiscent of coriander. It is deer and drought resistant and is tolerant of sandy and rocky dry soils but will grow in most soils, including clay, that have good drainage. Medium-sized fragrant double medium pink roses are produced throughout the growing season on this vigorous and disease resistant 'found rose' discovered and introduced by Barbara Worl. Grandmother's Hat Rose, and it has several other names which is often typical of roses that are highly regarded, is vigorous enough to be trained into a 12'H climber or it can also be maintained as a large shrub rose by heading back the larger growing canes. Hundreds of 1" wide dark purple daisies are produced in fall atop these dense mounding perennials that could easily be grown in the place of fall mums. Grape Crush New England Aster, a selection of Aster novae-angliae (a.k.a. Symphyotrichum novae-angliae), is a clump forming native perennial with a densely branching, naturally rounded habit requiring no pinching, and producing a superior fall show. It doesn't lodge or break over like the species can. The flowers attract bees and butterflies. Caterpillar host: Field Crescent, Pearl Crescent, Texan Crescent, Roadside Checkerspot, Hoffman's Checkerspot, Gorgonne Checkerdpot, and American Lady. The tall dusky flower spikes are adorned with grape juice purple buds that open to display the deep magenta, pea-like flowers with a starkly contrasting creamy to yellow keel and are produced in summer held above the dense mounds of lush green foliage. The flowers attract a variety of bee species. Grape Escape Baptisia or False Indigo, a hybrid cultivar of our native species (a.k.a. nativar), replaces the older Grape Taffy and boasts deeper richer colors, heavier flowering and vigor. The small to medium-sized single flowers can range from red tinged to lavender often with purple veining and are centered by a large boss of contrasting yellow tipped white filaments and are produce late in mid to late season or March-April. Flower color tends to be the most purple where soils are strongly acidic and this seems to be fairly common for purple flowered Camellias.
