Flame Camellia

Camellia 'Flame'  

The medium to large, semi-double, fiery flame red flowers centered by a contrasting boss of gold stamens atop white filaments and are produced in midseason, January to February. The pollen laden flowers attract bees and other pollinators on warmer winter days. Flame Camellia is a large flowered Japonica type with a vigorous upright and densely branching habit becoming rounded in form with maturity. In Stirling Macoboy's 1987 Illustrated Encyclopedia of Camellias he describes the flowers as "One of the most vividly colored of all camellias". Provide Camellias with a fertile soil rich in organic matter, with average moisture, and an organic mulch. Flare Out Louisiana Iris

Iris x 'Flare Out'  

The large light to medium blue to blue-purple falls and standards that lighten to white at their base and atypically all have gold signals, a.k.a. bee guides, creating a 'cartwheel' form and Flare Out was one of the very first of this form. It also has a contrasting greenish throat. Flare Out Louisiana Iris is a moderately vigorous midseason flowering selection reaching about 30" high at flowering. Provide Louisiana Irises with a moist to average moist to moderately wet site for the best results in a full to mostly sunny position. In average moist sites consider providing midday or filtered shade. Louisiana Iris make easy additions to bog gardens and along ponds, lakes, or other consistently moist sites. Item# 12042

An RHS Award of Garden Merit winner! Neatly formed, small to medium-sized, bell-shaped, red to coral-red flowers centered by a boss of contrasting gold tipped stamens on white filaments are produced over an extended period from early to midseason and are held against a foil of deep green, glossy, medium-textured foliage. Freedom Bell Camellia is classified as a non-Reticulata hybrid with Sasanqua-like foliage and is a vigorous growing, large evergreen shrub with a naturally upright, densely branching habit that rounds out with maturity. Garlic Chives or Chinese Chives are similar to Society Garlic in foliage and durability but with a slightly lower growth habit and producing flat-topped clusters of white blooms from summer to fall. Giant Hybrid Yellow Ginger,a hybrid Hedychium, developed and introduced by Aloha Tropicals in their goal to produce exceptionally large flowers and we are impressed by both the size of the individual flowers as well as the nice honeysuckle like fragrance. It's magnificent height makes it a prime choice for the back of the border or landscape but not too far from a path so you can enjoy its fragrance up close. Golden Sunset® Yellow Indiangrass

Sorghastrum nutans 'MNYG318153'  PP33776

The tall dense spikes of golden yellow flowers and seedheads are held well above the fountaining clump of wide olive green foliage on sturdy 6' high stems beginning in early August and are showy throughout winter. Golden Sunset® Yellow Indiangrass, a University of Minnesota selection of Sorghastrum nutans,  was selected for its early flowering, sturdy stems that do not fall over or lodge and last through winter, as well as for its reliable zone 3 cold hardiness. it has received high marks in trials and has been in development for about 15 years. This is a wonderful refinement for this showy native grass making it a useful addition to both formal and informal garden and landscape settings. The seed heads provide fodder for songbirds and other wildlife and the foliage is utilized by the Pepper-and-Salt Skipper butterfly as a caterpillar host plant. Provide a full to mostly sunny site optimally in a well-drained loamy soil with average moisture but the plants are fairly adaptable to soil types and are drought resistant once fully established. Gone With The Wind Prairie Dropseed

Sporobolus heterolepis 'Gone With The Wind'  

Airy, wispy, fragrant, tan and pink, conicle panicles are held atop the mounds of deep green foliage in late summer with the plants taking on red tones in fall and lightening to beige for winter. Gone With The Wind Prairie Dropseed, a selection of our native Sporobolus heterolepis, is a tough, herbaceous, medium-sized, clump forming, perennial grass with a slightly more compact size than the typical species and growing to about 36-40" high and 24-30" wide. The flowers are reported to have a fragrance reminiscent of coriander. It is deer and drought resistant and is tolerant of sandy and rocky dry soils but will grow in most soils, including clay, that have good drainage. Prairie Dropseed typically does not reseed in garden and landscape settings. Provide a full to mostly sunny site in an average moist, well-drained soil for optimum growth and vigor. The small to medium-sized single flowers can range from red tinged to lavender often with purple veining and are centered by a large boss of contrasting yellow tipped white filaments and are produce late in mid to late season or March-April. Flower color tends to be the most purple where soils are strongly acidic and this seems to be fairly common for purple flowered Camellias.
