Omega Skyrocket Stokesia Daisy, Stoke's Aster

Stokesia laevis 'Omega Skyrocket'  

A giant among Stokesias, Omega Skyrocket can reach heights of 3-4' when in flower and still produces the same large cornflower blue daisies typical of the species beginning in late spring with an extended flowering season that can continue into mid and late summer on well-established plants. Omega Skyrocket Stokesia was discovered by Ozzie Johnson and Ron Determann of the Atlanta Botanical Garden in Omega, Georgia in the1990s. Stoke's Aster comes highly recommended and it's easy to see why with moderate drought resistance, few pest or disease problems, deer and rabbit resistance and it revels in the heat and sun of our southern summers. Ontario Aster, Bottomland Aster

Symphyotrichum ontarionis, Aster ontarionis  

Beginning as early as midsummer the branching stems are cloaked in 1/2" wide white daisies with a contrasting yellow eye eventually becoming reddish. The nectar and pollen laden flowers attract mainly smaller pollinators like bees providing an important late summer source for winter stores. The Ontario Aster, Symphiotrichum ontarionis, is a native perennial that colonizes via rhizomes and grows to about 30-40"H. It is found mainly in the central US from coastal Louisiana north to Canada commonly in semi-shaded sites along stream banks, bogs, and similar consistently moist locations. Deadhead once flowering is complete to minimize reseeding if desired but songbirds may enjoy the small seeds if they are left to ripen. This species is very similar to and is often confused with other white flowered late summer and fall flowering asters. Caterpillar host: Field Crescent, Pearl Crescent, Texan Crescent, Roadside Checkerspot, Hoffman's Checkerspot, and American Lady. Onyx and Pearls Penstemon, Beardtongue

Penstemon digitalis 'Onyx and Pearls'  PP32613

The exceptionally dark purple to near black foliage provides the perfect foil for the numerous 2-3' high spikes of light lavender tubular flowers that appear white against their backdrop. Onyx and Pearls Penstemon or Beardtongue begins flowering in late spring to early summer providing weeks of color and a feast of nectar for hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Even when not in flower the cloak of dark foliage provides a wonderful contrast for its neighbors. Brilliant orange, 2" long tubular flowers are borne in large clusters in summer and fall or nearly continuously throughout the year under frost free conditions. The Orange Cape Honeysuckle is an easy heat and sun loving tropical that can be grown as a medium to large arching shrub or hedge, vine or espalier, and can be trained into tree standards. Clusters of orange, 1", Chinese Hats are produced from summer to autumn along the arching stems of this unusual shrub. A deep red, nectar rich, tubular flower emerges from the centers of each of the round calyx. Over In Gloryland Siberian Iris

Iris x 'Over In Gloryland'  

Another award winning Siberian Iris from the breeding work of Robert Hollingworth, Over In Gloryland Siberian Iris produces large flowers composed of deep royal purple standards and falls with a creamy white signal or 'blaze' in midseason atop sturdy 3-4' stems. The deep green narrow foliage provides grass-like motion in the garden even when the plants are not in flower. Provide Siberian Iris with an average moist to consistently moist moderately fertile soil and they can be planted near ponds, streams, and bog gardens as well as in average moist garden and landscape settings. They generally keep the best looking foliage where they have reliable access to moisture during the growing season. The Pagoda Flower produces huge spikes of 1/2" coral-pink to reddish orange butterfly shaped flowers from mid summer well into fall. The spikes can reach 18" high and are shaped very similarly to a Chinese pagoda with flowers opening continuously over a period of weeks. Rich reddish-orange flowers emerge from dark spikes that sit atop sturdy upright to arching stems with blue tinted foliage and are produced over a long period in summer on well-established plantings. The Mark Collins form of the Scarlet Ginger is considered to be the same as the cultivar 'Palani' and was collected by the late Ginger guru in Bhutan or Nepal. A 2020 Missouri Botanic Gardens Plant of Merit selection! 3-5" wide light pale pink to purplish pink coneflowers with drooping petals are held well above the rosette of narrow foliage on sturdy stems. Flowering normally occurs in late spring and summer and the nectar rich disk flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The Pale Purple Coneflower, Echinacea pallida, closely resembles the Sanguin Purple Coneflower, E. sanguinea, and like its cousin it is a taprooted, clump-forming perennial found mainly in the central US in meadows, glades, and other open areas. Small clusters of unusual looking, funnel-shaped deep red flowers are tipped with contrasting white and green with the insides of the flowers being streaked and flecked with brown. The flowers are produced in early to midsummer atop 2-3' high stems and attract hummingbirds and other pollinators. The Parrot Lily, Alstroemeria psittacina, is an old pass-a-long heirloom perennial whose rhizomatous habit may be too aggressive for most garden settings but in the right location it makes an easy and rewarding informal groundcover. Peachie's Pick Stokesia Daisy, Stoke's Aster

Large 3" wide, deep blue, cornflower-like daisies are produced on sturdy stalks starting in late spring and lasting through much of summer on well established clumps. Peachies Pick is a dense clump forming and exceptionally long flowering selection of the Stokesia Daisy. Its dense compact habit make this the perfect Stokes Aster for gardens and landscapes. Did we mention that it doesn't flop like older cultivars? This southern selection originated from the gardens of and was named for Peachie Saxon of Mississippi.
