Arching 2-3" long spikes adorned with numerous whitish to greenish tiny flowers are produced from the leaf axils with pollinated flowers producing small round, 1/5" diameter fruits that start out green and mature through orange-red to black. The Black Pepper Plant is a tropical, evergreen vine with glossy, deep green foliage. It uses adventitious roots to support itself on the bark of nearby trees, shrubs, or wooden trellises and supports. It branches readily creating a full lush decorative vine. Dallas Red Lantana has long been one of the best large growing red Lantanas on the market and is a vigorous plant growing to about 3' high and 4-5' wide by the end of the growing season in zone 8B and may become larger in areas with milder winters. The nectar rich, 1" long, tubular, fiery orange flowers are tipped in white to yellow and are produced throughout the growing season to potentially year-round under tropical conditions attracting mainly hummingbirds but also bees and butterflies. David Verity Cigar Plant is considered a hybrid of Cuphea micropetala and C. ignea, and whose popularity has far exceeded that of either parent, thanks to its exceptional flower power, vigor, and reliability. This is a heat and sun loving, naturally evergreen, shrub-like tropical with a somewhat upright vase-shaped to rounded habit commonly growing to 3-5' high and equally wide. It is considered reliably root hardy into zones 7B-8 with a proper mulch, where well-established plants typically return from the previous season's crown in spring. Ontario Aster, Bottomland Aster

Symphyotrichum ontarionis, Aster ontarionis

Beginning as early as midsummer the branching stems are cloaked in 1/2" wide white daisies with a contrasting yellow eye eventually becoming reddish. The nectar and pollen laden flowers attract mainly smaller pollinators like bees providing an important late summer source for winter stores. The Ontario Aster, Symphiotrichum ontarionis, is a native perennial that colonizes via rhizomes and grows to about 30-40"H. It is found mainly in the central US from coastal Louisiana north to Canada commonly in semi-shaded sites along stream banks, bogs, and similar consistently moist locations. Deadhead once flowering is complete to minimize reseeding if desired but songbirds may enjoy the small seeds if they are left to ripen. This species is very similar to and is often confused with other white flowered late summer and fall flowering asters. Caterpillar host: Field Crescent, Pearl Crescent, Texan Crescent, Roadside Checkerspot, Hoffman's Checkerspot, and American Lady.
