Ragin' Cajun Red Ruellia, Red Mexican Petunias
Ruellia elegans 'Ragin' Cajun'
Few plants can exceed the flower power of this excellent little performer! Deep red trumpet shaped flowers are produced in small clusters atop small wispy stems from spring to frost atop the medium green fuzzy foliage. Under warm tropical conditions it flowers year-round. Ragin' Cajun Red Ruellia, a selection of Ruellia elegans made by Robbie Dupont of Dupont Nursery, Plaquemine, Louisiana, is a small branching, clump-forming, herbaceous, naturally evergreen tropical to root hardy perennial growing to about 12" x 12". It makes an easy and well-behaved filler or spiller for container gardens either in mixed company or as a container specimen as well as for gardens and landscapes. The flowers attract a variety of pollinators including hummingbirds. Provide a full sun to partly sunny site in an average moist, fertile, average to well-drained soil. May reseed on exposed soils but in mulched areas this doesn't seem to be an issue. Can be utilized as a colorful mid to late-spring to fall groundcover if spaced about 9-12" apart. Item# 619
