Solid burgundy, burgundy tipped with yellow (the typical color), to solid yellow ray flowers surround the tall narrow grayish green cones of disc flowers and may be produced from late spring well into fall under average moisture conditions. The Mexican Hat or Gray Headed Coneflower, Ratibida columnifera, is an exceptionally easy to grow heat and sun-loving tap-rooted native perennial that is tough enough for roadside plantings right up next to the asphalt but colorful enough to be utilized in informal cottage garden settings. The flowers attract smaller pollinators and other garden beneficials and the somewhat lacy gray green foliage contrasts nicely with surrounding perennials.
