Magnoliaceae

Tulip Magnolia, Japanese Magnolia, Saucer Magnolia, Soulangeana Magnolia

Magnolia x 'Soulangeana', M. soulangeana, M. soulangiana

Large, fragrant, goblet shaped blooms are purplish outside with a creamy white inside and are lightly fragrant. The fallen petals create a soft pink blanket beneath the tree. Blooms in late winter to early spring. A small to medium sized, often multi-trunked, flowering tree to 20-30' high.

The Tulip or Soulangeana Magnolias are hardy easy to grow, small deciduous trees whose flowers look amazing where they tower above early season Camellias and Sasanquas. Scatter a few early flowering daffodils beneath and among them and you'll have a gorgeous spring garden to brighten any winter doldrums. Fall foliage of yellows and browns.
