Fragrant Plants

Dr. Seuss produces clusters of large, sweetly fragrant trumpets that open yellow, deepen to a gold, and finally to orange as they age. Angel's Trumpets are fast growing tropical shrubs that act-like dieback perennials in the northern parts of their range but readily return from the roots in spring. They also make easy to enjoy container plants that can be overwintered indoors. Item# 911.

Ducher is considered by many to be the only white China rose. The ivory to white, fragrant, double flowers are produced from spring through fall and are held against soft green foliage. With a more diminutive and refined habit than many China roses, Ducher is small enough for containers or in the garden. Ducher was selected as an Earthkind rose through the Texas AgriLife Extension service. Item# 9709.

Elegantly cupped fragrant rose-pink flowers are produced non-stop throughout the growing season on this floriferous and disease resistant tea rose. Duchesse de Brabant has an upright to vase shaped habit and makes an excellent specimen or use it in mass or as a hedge to wonderful effect. Another Earthkind rose selected by the Texas AgriLife Extension service for it's reliability, disease resistance, and flower power. Item# 9711.

Large clusters of sweetly fragrant, rich pink, 1-1/4" wide salverform flowers are produced atop sturdy 12-16" high stems beginning in midspring and continuing into summer with some additional repeat flowering later in the year on well-grown plants. Earlibeauty® Rose Bouquet Phlox is a vigorous slowly spreading, evergreen perennial Phlox that was selected for its early and long flowering season, vigorous groundcovering habit, as well as for its deep green foliage that has excellent disease resistance even under shade and high humidity. The sweetly fragrant and nectar rich flowers of Phlox, whose species are nearly all native to North America, are excellent for attracting butterflies which is their main pollinator. The large rounded clusters of deep orange and gold buds open to deep golden yellow, fragrant flowers that attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds in early spring atop the bare stems. Earl's Gold Deciduous Azalea, an Earl Summerville hybrid, develops into an upright to rounded, medium to large deciduous shrub well suited to bright woodland settings but will also thrive in full sun under good conditions. Like the Aromi hybrids, the Earl Summerville hybrids show excellent tolerance to the heat and humidity of the Southeastern US. Sometimes still fondly referred to as Wild Honeysuckle Bushes, these nativars will do best in an average moist, well-drained, fertile, acidic soil from partial shade to full sun conditions. An RHS Award of Garden Merit selection. Grown mainly as a tough and disease resistant evergreen hedge adorned with a cloak of deep bluish-green to gray-green foliage with a contrasting silvery reverse but this is also an excellent shrub for fruit production for home use or leave it for the songbirds. Ebbinge's Silverberry is a hybrid Elaeagnus that is prized for its toughness and fast rate of growth as a hedge or screen. It can be maintained as small as 3'H x 3'W but is more commonly maintained at 5-6'H x 5-6'W or allow it to grow to its 10-15'H x 10-15'W naturally rounded mature size. In fall it produces fragrant but not very showy greenish to cream colored, 1" long tubular flowers that ripen in spring into 1" long cylindrical red fruit flecked with silver and with a large seed that is also edible excluding its woody exterior. The fruit is astringent and tart if eaten before being fully soft, deep red, and ripe at which point it makes a wonderful jelly similar to mayhaw or crabapple. Songbirds and small mammals are happy to assist with collection of the ripe fruit. Deer, salt, and drought resistant once well-established requiring mainly good drainage in a full sun to partially shade site for optimum vigor and growth. Considered to be nitrogen fixing. Large grape-like clusters of sweetly fragrant, dark purple and reddish-purple, pea-like flowers are produced throughout summer on this strong woody twining climber. Evergreen Wisteria is a non-invasive species, unlike the common Chinese Wisteria, and can be evergreen in mild winter climates (zones 9-10) but is generally deciduous elsewhere. Established plants will flower continuously from late spring and into fall. The flowers attract bees and other smaller pollinators. Evergreen Wisteria is an easy to grow and reliable vine but will need a strong long-lasting support in its permanent home as it will get fairly heavy in time. Fragrant Pathways Gardenia is an exceptionally low growing and spreading form of the Dwarf Gardenia that produces fragrant, double white blossoms in late spring and early summer. The narrow, dark green, finer textured foliage of Fragrant Pathways adds to its interest as it creates a low evergreen groundcover. Considered to be slightly more cold hardy than G. radicans. A low dwarf form of Hoya that trails vigorously, and whose clusters of cream-colored to pure white flowers fill the air with a very lovely perfume for most of the year on established plants grown under good conditions. The Fragrant Hoya, Hoya lacunosa, is wonderful for a small hanging basket, as a groundcover beneath larger plants, and spilling from mixed container gardens in warm shaded sites.
