Lavender Porterweed
Nectar-rich, light purple flowers are produced continuously from spring to fall on tall spikes that butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds cannot seem to resist! Lavender Porterweed is a medium to large growing exceptionally full and vigorous Porterweed was once considered to be a purple form of the highly popular Coral Porterweed although we have learned that this is a sterile or nearly sterile hybrid cultivar. Porterweeds are excellent nectar producers outperforming nearly all other butterfly plants in the garden.

Porterweeds are likely the number one favorite nectar plant for butterfly gardeners and surely for the butterflies themselves. I would be surprised to find a plant that produces a more continuous supply of nectar rich flowers from summer to frost, even most Lantana has to catch its breath from time to time during the heat of summer. This is one of the few plants that you will find consistently at nearly every butterfly conservatory. In zone 8B-9 we find that a small percentage larger growing Porterweeds, like Lavender, Coral, and Purple, may return from the roots in late spring if well mulched. In zone 10 it is likely to be a reliable perennial if not evergreen. Porterweed is known to reseed particularly in mild winter climates.
