Dutchmans Pipe Vine
Large 6-8" burgundy and cream, widely flaring Dutchman's Pipe shaped flowers are borne from summer to fall on this vigorous and easy to grow perennial vine. A fast growing root hardy perennial into zone 8, the Dutchman's Pipevine makes a quick summer screen and a definite conversation piece anytime it's in flower.

The Dutchman's Pipevine is considered hardy in zones 8-12 and some sources suggest that it can be grown as a root hardy perennial in zone 8 given winter protection with a loose, breathable mulch. Where not hardy it can be successfully grown as a container plant.

The Pipevines are used by the Pipevine Swallowtail and Polydamas Swallowtail butterflies as a caterpillar host plant. The majority of tropical Pipevines, like this one, are not considered good choices for the Pipevine Swallowtail whereas the native species as well as the Fringed Dutchman's PipevineAristolochia fimbriata, are considered as good hosts for these butterflies. We have been informed that the Polydamas Swallowtail caterpillars can successfully grow to maturity on Aristolochia gigantea, although the Pipevine Swallowtails do not reach maturity if grown on this species.
