Monkey Ball tuber (Green), Ornamental Yam tuber, Monkey ball, Dioscorea

The Monkey Ball Vine or or Air Potato is a vigorous tropical vine with large, glossy heart shaped foliage that can quickly cover a trellis or arbor during the warmer months of the year. It produces an abundance of large, medium, and small round, knobby, light brown potato-like bulbils which are easy to over winter if kept from freezing temperatures.

This variety is not generally considered edible. Probably best grown as a container plant. In winter it will die back to its large underground tuber and can be stored pot and all in a dry area that does not fall below freezing. In spring pull the pot out and begin watering again and growth should quickly return.

The Air Potato is considered to be a vigorous and destructive invasive in portions of the US in particular in Florida. It appears to have the potential to escape, persist, and reproduce in areas with mild winters (zone 9,10,11). We offer this plant only as an ornamental that should be grown with caution and care by responsible gardeners and preferably in zones 7 and colder. Once established it can be difficult to eradicate which is best done by digging and destroying the large underground tubers as well as the bulbils.

We ship nice sized tubers, but no vines...you grow them!
