Blue Sky Vine, Blue Trumpet Vine, Blue Sky Thunbergia
3" purplish-blue trumpet-like blooms with a white to light yellow throat are born in spring and summer. The Blue Sky Vine is a vigorous and hardy tropical vine that can be grown as a tuberous rooted, summer flowering perennial into zone 8B. In frost free areas this heat and sun loving vine is evergreen and can flower throughout the year. The large flowers attract bees and other pollinators.

The Blue Sky Vine makes an easy and rewarding container plant where not hardy. Provide it with a sunny window for winter and well-draining fertile soil in containers. Once you are past the danger of frost in your area and night time temperatures remain above about 45-50oF you can move it outdoors into a mostly sunny position, at least 3-4 hours of direct sunlight or bright filtered sunlight, for the best flower production.

Remember the Blue Sky Vine flowers on new growth so ample nutrients and sunlight are necessary for the best flowering. Well-established plants act like herbaceous perennials and if provided with an appropriate winter mulch can tolerate temperatures near 15oF for short periods. Like many root hardy tropical plants, the Blue Sky Vine is best planted in the ground as early in the season as possible (well after the danger of frost has past and soil temperatures have begun to warm up) to allow them to develop a strong root system before winter arrives.
