After losing its cloak of orange, yellow, and red fall color the honey sweet, dark orange and black, 1-1/2" wide fruits of the American Persimmon become readily visible. The fully ripe honey sweet fruit of this easy to grow native tree will not be likely to win a beauty contest with dark red orange skin speckled with black but on your palette it is like eating honey sweet persimmon candy. Provide the American Persimmon with good drainage and give it plenty of room to grow. Our plants are seedlings and you will need a male and female for pollination.

The height of the American Persimmon seems to depend on available moisture and fertility, the more of each are available the larger the ultimate tree height. Locally and in our orchard from which these tree seedlings were produced the trees grow to about 30-40' high. *In drier sites 15' high may be the maximum whereas in rich moist soils the American Persimmon has been known to obtain heights of nearly 100'.

We cannot know the sex of the seedlings that we are sending out and the trees generally do not fruit for the first 10 to 25 years depending on growing conditions. Your best bet may be to purchase at least two if not three trees, even then we cannot guarantee what sex they will be.

Narrow Leaved Bird of Paradise, Rush Leaved Bird of Paradise, Leafless Bird of Paradise, Crane Flower
Fiery orange, yellow, deep cobalt blue along with reds and near purples adorn the large showy flowers and bracts which are produced mainly during spring and fall as well as in winter in areas with mild tropical climates or where grown indoors. In almost all regards the Narrow-Leaved Bird of Paradise resembles its more common cousin the Orange Bird of Paradise, although this one is more resistant to drought and has reduced its leaf blades to the point where, once the plant is mature, only the narrow, rush-like, blue-green petioles remain with which to endure the desert conditions from which it arises. It is considered to be more drought resistant and prefers well-draining soils. Makes for an unusual container specimen or use it similarly to the Orange Bird of Paradise as an informal hedge, shrub, or specimen plant. Item# 11139
