Hanging clusters of buttery yellow fragrant flowers that are centered by a purple to burgundy star-shaped corona are produced during the warmer months of the year. Hoya cumingiana, or Paluki in its native Phillipines, is somewhat of a sprawling shrub-like Hoya with closely stacked small rounded glossy medium green foliage that may be at its best when trained to a support like a small trellis. Its foliage is nice enough that it could be grown for its architectural form with the flowers simply as a bonus. This is considered to be one of the easier to grow shrub-like Hoyas that mainly needs to be allowed to dry out somewhat between waterings. The fragrant flowers are likely to draw butterflies and other pollinators. Its ease of growth, unusual looking foliage, and fragrant flowers make this Hoya one of the more sought after species. Hoya obscura

Hanging clusters of small individual flowers are centered by waxy yellow, star-shaped coronas with a creamy white to pink tinged halo and recurving fuzzy corollas are produced during the growing season. Hoya obscura is one of the more vigorous and easier to grow vining waxflowers that is well-suited to hanging basket culture or give it a trellis or other support for its twining vines to climb. The major leaf veins are fairly prominent in this species even from the upperside of the medium green foliage and under cool direct sunlight the foliage can become more olive green and may even take on red tones. To some the flowers have a light fragrance and it may be most noticeable at night or very early in the day. The mother plant was sold to us as Hoya pusilla, and we thank Rachel for pointing this out for us, so if you have purchased that species from us it is H. obscura. Item# 12367

Incense Passionflower, Passionvine

Passiflora x 'Incense'

The deep purple 3-4", richly fragrant exotic looking flowers are produced throughout the growing season on this vigorous Passionvine with medium green foliage. Incense is considered to be one of the hardiest passionvines for US gardens along with the native Maypop Passionvine, Passiflora incarnata, one of its parents, and the US native Yellow Passionvine, Passiflora lutea. In our experience Incense rarely produces fruit on its own and some sources suggest that hand pollination is required. Like the native Maypop Passionflower, Incense readily spreads by rhizomes. Caterpillar host: Gulf Fritillary, Julia Butterfly, Variegated Fritillary, and Zebra Longwing. John Elsley Firecracker Vine

Manettia cordifolia 'John Elsley'

Along with the Coral Honeysuckles, this is easily our top recommended vine for attracting hummingbirds! The bright red, 2" long, tubular flowers are born in profusion from spring to fall on this vigorous but small growing perennial vine that appears to have been perfectly designed for hummingbirds. Few other manageable, perennial, hummingbird attracting vines can compete with the John Elsley Firecracker Vine, a selection of Manettia cordifolia, when it comes to sheer flower power!
