Giant Red Turks Cap, Mazapan, Sleepy Wax Mallow, Giant Mexican Turk's Cap, Sleepy Hibiscus
Giant Turks Cap produces a seemingly endless display of 2-3" long, pendant, sleepy scarlet flowers from late summer through spring where kept free from frosts and provided with ample sunlight. Smooth, narrow, waxy, rich green foliage. Excellent for Hummingbirds and other long-tongued pollinators. This is a vigorous, shrub-like woody perennial that can reach 8-12' in mild winter climates and few plants can compete with the enormous amount of flowers that this plant can produce.

The Giant Turk's Caps are probably best suited to zones 9B and 10 where it makes an excellent specimen plant, hedge, or screen. In frost free climates they can flower throughout much of the year. Where frosts and freezes do occur on a regular basis consider providing the Giant Turk's Cap with a warm and sunny, protected southern exposure to get the most flowering out of it. In the cooler portions of zone 9A and into zone 8B it will act as a die-back perennial freezing to the ground but readily returning in spring to flower the following fall. As with any tropical plant that you intend to grow as a die-back perennial, it is always best to establish them in spring and early summer and provide an appropriate winter mulch.

Pruning can be done at almost any time but between flowering cycles is generally preferred, like during mid-summer, where it doesn't freeze back. Where it does freeze back you can prune the dead out at any time during winter or early spring.

The Giant Turk's Cap is considered to be a hybrid, either man-made or natural, and has been passed around for many years and is now known by a variety of common names including: Mazapan, Sleepy Hibiscus, Sleepy Wax Mallow, Turk's Cap Mallow, Cardinal's Hat, Firecracker Hibiscus, and Giant Mexican Turk's Cap.
